Tsagaglalal or “She Who Watches” is one of North America’s most famous pictographs. An ancient rock painting in the Columbia River Gorge located on a cliffside perch in Washington’s Columbia Hills State Park/Horsethief Lake. The story is that Coyote, known as a trickster by Native Americans, had attempted to betray the leader of a local tribe. After a wrestling match, the wily animal tossed the female chief onto the cliff where she turned to stone. To this day, the tribe’s guardian watches over her children. We love this story.
Achelois (pronounced “A-khe-LO-ees”) is a minor Greek goddess. She was one of the deities identified with the moon and its monthly cycle. Achelois has been translated in English as “she who washes away pain”, and she was often looked to by the ancient Greeks as a source of comfort and healing. Another great story.
“She Who Washes” Soap was originally created by Hood River artist Kathy Watne and has recently been resurrected with the help of fellow artist Noelle Newton. Soaps and other body products are made with all-natural and many locally sourced ingredients. Handmade soap retains the glycerin that commercial soaps lack (making them naturally moisturizing) and doesn’t include chemical fragrances and preservatives. Our soap is made with ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and olive oil right here in Hood River, OR. We use steam-distilled essential oils as well as ingredients we grow in our gardens or forage locally.
