Tsagaglalal or “She Who Watches” is one of North America’s most famous pictographs. An ancient rock painting in the Columbia River Gorge located on a cliffside perch in Washington’s Columbia Hills State Park/Horsethief Lake. The story is that Coyote, known as a trickster by Native Americans, had attempted to betray the leader of a local tribe. After a wrestling match, the wily animal tossed the female chief onto the cliff where she turned to stone. To this day, the tribe’s guardian watches over her children. We love this story.

Achelois (pronounced “A-khe-LO-ees”) is a minor Greek goddess. She was one of the deities identified with the moon and its monthly cycle. Achelois has been translated in English as “she who washes away pain”, and she was often looked to by the ancient Greeks as a source of comfort and healing. Another great story.

“She Who Washes” Soap was originally created by Hood River artist Kathy Watne and has recently been resurrected with the help of fellow artist Noelle Newton. Soaps and other body products are made with all-natural and many locally sourced ingredients. Handmade soap retains the glycerin that commercial soaps lack (making them naturally moisturizing) and doesn’t include chemical fragrances and preservatives. Our soap is made with ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and olive oil right here in Hood River, OR. We use steam-distilled essential oils as well as ingredients we grow in our gardens or forage locally.

Why buy handmade soap?

Handmade Soap Contains Glycerin. Glycerin is a natural skin emollient (skin softener) that attracts water from the surrounding air. Because of this, glycerin is highly prized in soaps, lotions and creams for maintaining moisture in the skin. Animal fats and vegetable oils contain 7-13% of glycerin as a part of their natural chemical makeup. During the soap making process, the fats/oils and lye blend together to form soap while the natural glycerin maintains its integrity as glycerin and basically settles in between the soap molecules. Most big name soaps have had all of the glycerin removed and placed into additional products such as lotions and creams. That way instead of buying one product that will clean AND moisturize, (such as handmade soap) a consumer now has to buy two products to serve the same purpose, resulting in an increase in profit for the company.

Fewer Harsh Chemicals. Big name soap is also blended with filler ingredients and chemicals such as Sodium Isethionate (a foam enhancer) and Dipropylene Glycol (a chemical solvent). Handmade soaps use natural oils and ingredients and our process preserves the integrity of the oils/fats/butters. Coconut oil goes in, saponified (made into soap) coconut oil comes out. Shea butter goes in, saponified shea butter comes out. Because of this, the oils/fats/butters maintain their vitamins, minerals and skin-loving qualities in the final soap product. Enhancements such as essential oils, clays, and other botanical additives contribute to the beneficial properties of this handmade soap and are gentler than commercial additives.

Save Water. Bar soap uses significantly less water to produce than liquid soap, and also has less packaging than a bottle of body wash or hand soap. Studies have also shown the on average people unnecessarily use more liquid soap to wash hands than bar soap. Try some handmade Soap Today!

About

Kathryn Watne and Noelle Newton both belonged to Art on Oak, an artist co-op in downtown Hood River, OR.  When the co-op soap maker relocated, we saw an opportunity. Kathryn had made soap in the past under the name ‘She Who Washes’ so we decided to revive the business and started making soap again. All-natural soaps with essential oils, and clays, botanicals, and spices for color.  Visit this site for photos of our soapmaking adventures or follow us on Instagram or FB for more up-to-date information.
